What is a Doula?

The Greek word "doula" means women caregiver and is nowadays used to describe a professionally trained and experienced labor companion, who provides the pregnant woman and her partner with continuous emotional support, physical comfort and assistance in obtaining information before, during and after childbirth.

Unlike the term "delivering a baby", which puts the responsibility onto the medical doctor or midwife, "giving birth" relates to the Mother and her Baby, where it shall naturally be. It is a transformative event and every woman has the right to explore the choices she has at birth, so she forms a memorable experience for her lifetime and the next generations.

A doula does not compensate for other staff or the partner on site. She is a complimentary addition, an advocate, trusted yet distant enough to say and do things, nobody else may.

During the postpartum time, especially with a first child, a doula supports the new family with all arising questions and situations related to the baby, the mother and the whole family. There will be a need for recovery and sleep, so the doula can take care of the baby for a few hours, watch the other children, cook a meal or manage social responsibilities.

I have to keep it short here, but if you would like to learn more, please have a look through the library and contact me for a free conversation.
